Frequently Asked Questions About Narcotics Anonymous

Our main goal is to carry the message to the addict who is still suffering

Our promise is hope... and our message is freedom

An addict seeking recovery need not die from the horrors of addiction without a chance to learn the NA method

Anonymity

The basic principle of anonymity allows addicts to attend meetings without fear of legal or social consequences. This is an important consideration for an addict considering going to a meeting for the first time. Anonymity also supports an atmosphere of equality in meetings. She contributes to ensuring that neither personal identity nor individual circumstances are seen as more important than the message of recovery in Narcotics Anonymous.

Your positive feedback to others about our fellowship is just the beginning. We do not accept outside contributions and do not have non-addict volunteers for the fellowship. The best thing you can do to help us is to advise someone with a drug problem that NA is available to them, that there is no cost to join us, and that we may be able to help the person.

How is the fellowship funded?

We are completely self-reliant. At each meeting contributions are required to help pay for refreshments, the rent of the meeting place and literature, but they are not compulsory. Any surplus material is passed on to other areas of the fellowship to help carry the message to the still-suffering addict. We do not accept outside contributions

How can I get someone to stop using drugs?

From our personal experiences, you can't stop a drug addict from using. An addict will only stop when there is a desire to stop using the drug and seek help. If you know someone who uses, you can give them some of our literature and meeting schedule so that they can come to one of our meetings to see if NA can help them stop using. Narcotics Anonymous does not do so-called “interventions” with drugs and we do not offer advice to family members, friends or employers on how to deal with drug addicts.

What is the difference between Narcotics Anonymous and drug treatment centers? Fellowship and psychotherapy?

Narcotics Anonymous is a non-profit organization, and has no subscription fees or dues imposed on its members. We do not have professional medical staff or counselors to treat or advise our members. We do not present ourselves as professionals to addicts who come to us seeking recovery. We introduce ourselves as addicts, just like them, who have learned how to stop using drugs, lost their cravings and found a new way to live. (For the issue of psychological treatment) Our meetings are not conducted as a psychological treatment session, and we do not allow interventions during the posts, and we do not have professional or professionally trained coordinators

If a person is under the influence of drugs, can they participate in NA meetings?

We do not exclude addicts who may be under the influence of drugs from our meetings. Our third tradition states that the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using drugs. But some of our groups do not allow drug addicts to actively participate in their meetings, such as participating or taking a role to serve in the meeting in order to keep our message clear in the meetings, and most groups ask the person if he has used within the past 24 hours to refrain from participating and to speak to Any member after the meeting if they need to talk. We also suggest that people under the influence not volunteer to serve like the members you see at meetings, workshops, or open days.

How do you deal with mentally ill addicts?

We do not exclude addicts from our meetings because of their health problems, whether physical or mental. Our third tradition states that the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using drugs

Does Narcotics Anonymous operate any treatment centers or detoxification units?

Are fellowship meetings confidential? Is it legal?

We do our best to respect personal anonymity. But we cannot guarantee complete privacy or complete anonymity in the community, nor do we have the legal right to confidentiality as a doctor or lawyer has

I'm not addicted, but can I attend your meetings?

We have meetings open to the public, which are featured in our meeting schedule. We ask that you respect our closed sessions, which are for addicts and for those who think they have a problem with drug use

Is Narcotics Anonymous only for addicts who use drugs?

We believe that our problem is not the use of any particular type or group of drugs, but rather that our problem is the disease of addiction, and our program is a way to abstain from all types of drugs
